How to Write a Lesson Plan for a Mixed-Ability Class

Mixed-ability classes are one of the hardest planning challenges a teacher faces. Planning for a set — a group selected for similar prior attainment — means you're working within a relatively defined range. Planning for a mixed-ability class means holding multiple entry points, multiple paces of learning, and multiple success criteria in your head simultaneously.

That's a lot of cognitive load before you've even thought about the actual content.

Start with one objective — not a range

The temptation with mixed-ability classes is to write different objectives for different groups. Resist it. One clear objective for the lesson is better than three tiered objectives that create three parallel lessons running simultaneously.

The single objective should be achievable by the vast majority of the class, expressed at the level of your average student. Differentiation then adjusts the entry point and the ceiling, not the destination. A student working two years below their chronological age and a student working two years above it can both be working toward the same objective — they just arrive at it via different paths.

Design the task at the middle, scaffold down, extend up

Start with the task you'd set for a student performing at the expected level for the year group. Then ask:

  • What would make this accessible for someone who finds this topic difficult? (Scaffold down)
  • What would genuinely challenge someone who finds this straightforward? (Extend up)

The scaffold might be a writing frame, a word bank, a worked example, or a simplified version of a source text. The extension might be a second related question, a comparison task, or an application to a new context. The core task stays the same; the floor and ceiling move.

Plan the starter with range in mind

Mixed-ability starters need to be accessible to everyone without boring those who find the content straightforward. Tasks that allow multiple levels of response — a question that can be answered simply or with complexity — work better than ones that have a single correct answer at a fixed difficulty level.

Discussion-based starters often work well: "What do you already know about X?" gives you diagnostic information about the range in the room and lets every student contribute at their own level. A task that requires very specific prior knowledge will immediately lose the students who don't have it.

Pacing for a wide range

Fast finishers in mixed-ability classes are a planning problem. If your extension task is "write more of the same", fast students will be bored; if it's genuinely different and more demanding, you need to have prepared it.

Plan the extension task as carefully as you plan the core task. It shouldn't be busy work — it should be something that a high-attaining student would find genuinely interesting. A comparative task, an application to a new context, a metacognitive question ("why does this work?") rather than a content question ("what is X?") are all more interesting extensions than "do more questions".
